3 Tips to Start a Great Cardio Routine

Aerobic or cardiovascular exercise can be a health-boosting powerhouse. There are different types of cardio exercises with a ton of health benefits. According to experts, it’s never too late to start or restart a cardio routine. And here are a few pro-tips to help you to do so, and stick with it.

Starting Low and Slow

It’s common to do too much too soon. But that is not helpful in every scenario. In the case of cardio exercises, experts recommend starting with something easy. It can be for a shorter duration, or it could have fewer reps, but it should feel easy on your body and mind. Then the best way to increase the intensity is to go for a general progression of up to 10% on a weekly basis. Going slow makes you methodical, making your exercise routine more effective.

Listening to Your Body

This is the point where there is no playbook or any set of rules except one. Listening to your body helps you avoid injury, and this is different for everyone. It depends on your body’s capability. You have to balance between pushing your body to its limit and taking rest while needed, and you have to be completely honest about it. A workout expert or trainer can help you there, by offering objective observation and feedback. Cardio exercise isn’t pleasant all the time, but that doesn’t mean it has to be painful.

Making it Personal

Fitness is a personal journey. So, it’s important to keep a tab on improvements by focusing on yourself. Unless you are a competitive athlete, comparing yourself to other people around you is not at all productive. Your only competitor should be you. Comparing with others often lead us to set unrealistic cardio workout goals and we tend to overlook our own needs and capabilities. This ultimately results in severe injuries and health hazards. So, keeping the focus on yourself along the way is the key to success here.
